Regular camping gear is ill-suited for Burning Man. For example: regular tents have a ton of mesh to allow ventilation, reduce weight, or let you see the stars. All this mesh is horrible because of all the dust storms on the playa that you specifically would like to keep out!

Gear that is suitable for Burning Man can be very expensive. For example, canvas tents can run close to $1000 and to our knowledge there are no rental options. So many of our customers wonder, how the heck can I get affordable gear for Burning Man?

Firstly, think about whether affordability of gear is the primary concern. A ticket to Burning Man is alone over $1000. For many people, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience they save up for, including cost of travel which may include flights and hotels. If you're already investing this much, quality gear to ensure a good experience may just have to be part of the cost. For other people who want to go every year, they already know that the cost of gear spreads out over time, and in fact have storage lockers full of separately sealed off Burning Man supplies and equipment.

If affordability is still a concern for you, your first place to look should be borrowing from the Burning Man community, which has a deep ethos of sharing! Ask either your camp, or the many Burner groups (e.g., on Facebook) in communities worldwide for spare gear.

If you can't find any gear to be shared, and are concerned about affordability, honestly, just use cheap, lower-end gear. It's painful to advise that against our own values. We do it only in this case because playa dust is so difficult to clean out, and this is why seasoned Burners have separately sealed off Burning Man specific gear. At least, rather than buying cheap gear new and in keeping with the Burning Man sustainability ethos, you can get lower-end gear from our Borrow program! The only difference is that we'll ask you to not return the item(s), and we'll keep the normally refundable deposit, so it's like you're "buying" the gear.

You may wonder why not rent to save money? We can't emphasize the cleaning difficulties enough! It takes hours to try to hand-wash items covered in the micro-fine playa dust.

If you decide to rent against our advice, any camping gear rented during the period when Burning Man will be taking place will require a deposit, regardless of total days of rental and whether or not you are actually going to Burning Man. If gear comes back with any playa dust**, you're unlikely to get the deposit returned. In other words, if you decide to rent, you should be prepared to treat the deposit like a convenience fee, for not having to deal with the gear afterward.

You may wonder, can't you just clean it yourself to get your deposit back? Unlikely. And we're just trying to be very honest upfront because sometimes people will try to clean it themselves and still lose their deposit, which is understandably frustrating! As a business, we have to set higher standards. You wouldn't want to rent a dusty tent, right? Well for that reason, we have to clean beyond what may be good-enough to you personally, so that we can get the item back to a condition where it's acceptable to be rented out again. This is a huge effort for our small business, requiring us to carve out extra time and resources to manage. The truth is for most people, it's not worth their time to clean the gear to a point where they can get the deposit back, anyway.

In summary our best advice for affordable gear is 1) "buy" our lower-end gear (borrowing without deposit return), or 2) buy cheap new gear from a box retailer or online.

**The alkaline micro-fine playa dust is a feature of various places... but in our lengthy experience as an outdoor retailer, people only go camping where there's playa dust for Burning Man. If you're going anywhere else, you should have no concerns about getting your deposit back. That said though, if you're somehow the one-in-a-million person not going to Burning Man but going somewhere else with a similar playa dust profile, you also will risk losing your deposit.

We are running a pilot initiative: we will send a driver to select sites only in San Francisco, where you can meet them to return your gear rather than coming back to the shop yourself

Night before - we'll send an estimate time window we will arrive at the site, based on a final schedule of which sites we will actually visit
Day of - we'll send our estimated arrival time to the site and a warning when we're leaving

As we work out this pilot, and given the uncertainty of traffic conditions, it's best to select this option if you have flexibility in time to meet us. We'll only be able to stay at each site for ~15 minutes; if you miss us you will have to return gear yourself.

Water Guard +

We'll dry tents & shade structures Tents & shade structures almost always get a little wet, whether from rain or just morning dew. Most people find it very difficult to fully dry them out, because you need a lot of space to fully stretch & spread out the fabric for several hours to dry (wiping down doesn't really work). If you decline Water Guard & any part of the item is still damp (as assessed by our team during our checking process), we charge a $30 drying fee per tent or shade structure

We'll cover minor damages & small parts lost For all the rental items in your order, e.g., tent stakes, goggle bags, gear straps, etc. We may still have to charge for significant damage (e.g., where the entire item just needs to be replaced), or for major parts lost (e.g., the replacement cost of a rainfly is in many cases equivalent to a new tent)
